Visa Requirements for Citizens of Slovakia

Find out the visa requirements for Slovakian nationals when traveling to different foreign countries.

Visa Requirements for Slovakian Citizens

Visa requirements for citizens of Slovakia are the regulations on entry to other countries that Slovakian passport holders must comply with. They dictate whether Slovaks must apply for a visa or travel authorization or not and, if so, which type is necessary.

The Henley Passport Index ranks the Slovakia passport as the 11th strongest passport in the world in terms of the number of countries it allows visa-free access to. Slovakian passport holders may travel to over 180 destinations without obtaining a visa in advance from an embassy.

The visa requirements for Slovakian nationals depend on the country or territory the traveler wishes to visit.

Other factors include the purpose of the trip and the length of time the individual plans to spend in their destination.

Certain countries have electronic visas (eVisas) for Slovak visitors that can be obtained online, providing a quick and convenient method of obtaining permission to travel to the destination.

Meanwhile, other locations require travelers from Slovakia to apply at an embassy or consulate. This involves going to the diplomatic mission in person and submitting the required documentation.

Visas on arrival for Slovak visitors are available at certain destinations.

Slovakian citizens are visa-exempt for short stays in certain countries and territories. Visa-free entry is generally only allowed for tourism and, in some cases, for business and transit. For longer visits and to enter for other purposes, a visa will be required.

In order to enter some countries visa-free, nationals of Slovakia must register their details online with an electronic travel authorization system, which provides them with a visa waiver.

List of Visa Countries for Slovakia Passport Holders

In order to visit many countries, Slovak travelers must obtain a visa. The visa requirements for Slovakian passport holders vary depending on the destination country or territory.

In 2021, citizens of Slovakia require a visa or travel authorization to enter 131 different countries for any reason.

Many of these countries have an online platform that allows Slovakian nationals to apply online for an electronic visa (eVisa), avoiding spending time and effort going to an embassy.

Other destinations have visa on arrival facilities for visitors from Slovakia, allowing a visa to be obtained at the border. Some countries insist that Slovaks apply in-person at a diplomatic mission like an embassy.

The type of visa required often depends on 2 main factors: the length of time the Slovakian citizen intends to remain in the country and the purpose of entering.

Depending on the destination, an electronic visa may cover visits for tourism, business, or medical treatment.

On the other hand, work visas and residence visas are usually issued exclusively by embassies.

All of the countries for which Slovakian nationals require a visa to enter can be found in the map and lists below.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization for Citizens of Slovakia

Citizens of Slovakia can obtain an electronic visa (eVisa) or an electronic travel authorization (ETA) for various countries and territories.

Both eVisas and ETAs for Slovakian nationals can be acquired by applying online. The convenience of filling out a digital application form avoids the need to go to an embassy in person. As a rule, online applications are quicker to fill out and submit and are processed faster than traditional visas.

An eVisa for Slovakian citizens is simply a visa that is obtained online.

An ETA is a visa waiver, which grants Slovakia passport holders permission to enter a country without a visa. Online ETA forms tend to be more straightforward than those of eVisas and require Slovak travelers to register their details.

Both eVisa and ETA platforms are generally streamlined and user-friendly, offering the most convenient method of obtaining authorization to travel to a destination.

Slovakian nationals are eligible for an eVisa or ETA for over 30 countries.

The maximum length of time that a citizen of Slovakia is permitted to stay with an eVisa or ETA varies between 14 days and 3 months, depending on the country or territory.

ETAs and eVisas for Slovakian nationals can either be valid for a single entry or multiple entries. For some destinations, they only permit visits for tourism; in other cases they also allow entry for business, transit, and/or certain other purposes.

An approved ETA or eVisa for Slovakian citizens is delivered by email. Some destinations require a printed copy to be presented at border control, while others are electronically linked to the Slovakian biometric passport.

See below the list of countries that have an eVisa or ETA system available to Slovak travelers.

Visa On Arrival for Citizens of Slovakia

A visa on arrival for citizens of Slovakia is a visa that can be applied for at the border of the country or territory to which the individual is traveling.

Depending on the destination, visas on arrival for Slovakians may be available at airports, seaports, and/or land border checkpoints.

Slovakian nationals can obtain a visa on arrival for over 20 countries.

The maximum length of stay permitted for a traveler from Slovakia with a visa on arrival varies between 7 days and 3 months.

When arriving in the country or territory, Slovakian passport holders must wait in line to fill out an application form for a visa on arrival. This can take some time.

In some destinations, it is required to pay the processing fee in cash and it may be necessary to do so in the local currency.

When it is also possible to apply for an eVisa, this is recommended as it is quicker and easier than a visa on arrival and avoids the extra wait and potential stress at border control.

Embassy Visa Required for Citizens of Slovakia

An embassy visa for Slovakian citizens is a visa obtained by submitting an application in-person at an overseas diplomatic mission (an embassy or consulate).

Many countries and territories are shifting towards electronic visas and travel authorizations, which are gradually replacing embassy visas. However, certain countries still require nationals of Slovakia to apply for a visa at a diplomatic mission.

The majority of destinations only issue work and residence visas from embassies and consulates, meaning that Slovaks who plan to live and/or seek employment abroad will likely have to apply for the relevant embassy or consular visa(s).

Around 80 countries worldwide require citizens of Slovakia to apply for a visa at an embassy for all visits, regardless of length or purpose.

When applying for an embassy visa for certain destinations, Slovakian nationals may be required to make an appointment at the embassy or consulate and attend an interview. An application form must be completed and supporting documentation provided.

Electronic visas and travel authorizations are typically much quicker to apply for and receive than embassy visas.

Visa Not Required for Citizens of Slovakia

Citizens of Slovakia do not require a visa to enter over 110 countries.

For the majority of destinations, this visa exemption for Slovak visitors applies to short-term visits for the purpose of tourism and, in some cases, other purposes, such as business and transit.

The maximum length of time a traveler from Slovakia may spend in another country or territory without a visa varies from 30 days to 1 year, depending on the destination.

If a Slovakian national wishes to stay in a country for which they are visa-exempt for longer than the permitted maximum stay, or if they wish to enter for a purpose not covered by the visa exemption (such as to live or work there), they must apply for the relevant visa.

The exceptions to this are the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Slovakian nationals enjoy freedom of movement to all fellow member states of the EU and Schengen Area (including the EFTA).

The EU and Schengen Area

Slovakia is part of both the European Union (EU) and Schengen Area. As such, Slovakian nationals have the right to freedom of movement to all countries within these blocs.

This includes all EU member states and the 4 countries that make up the EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland).

Citizens of Slovakia may travel to any of these countries without a visa and may use either their passport or an ID card to enter.

If a Slovakian national wants to live and work in any of these countries, they have the right to do so without obtaining a residence or work visa/permit.
