Learn about visa requirements for nationals of Micronesia to travel to any country around the globe.

Visa Requirements for Micronesian Citizens

Visa requirements for nationals from Micronesia are entry restrictions placed on Micronesian citizens by the authorities of other states around the world.

Depending on the purpose of the stay and how long the traveler is planning to stay in the destination country, visa requirements for Micronesian passport holders may vary.

Accordingly to the Henley Passport Index, the Micronesian passport is ranked 49th in terms of travel freedom. Micronesians are able to travel to over 90 countries without obtaining a visa or with a visa on arrival option.

Visa-exempt countries permit individuals from Micronesia to gain entry to their borders without a visa for short periods of stay, which may vary between 21 days and 6 months. The permitted purpose of stay is usually for either tourism, business, or to transit to an onward destination.

Micronesians that are planning to stay longer in a visa not required country, or travel for purposes such as to study or work, will need to obtain a visa to travel to these same destinations.

Regardless of the aim of the trip and the expected amount of time they will spend in the country, citizens from Micronesia need to obtain travel authorization to visit visa-required countries.

This can differ between an electronic visa, a visa on arrival, or an embassy visa from the closest diplomatic office of the destination in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Some countries around the world oblige Micronesian passport holders to obtain an approved visa to cross their borders, no matter how long they are planning to stay in the destination or the purpose of the visit.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization systems for Micronesians allow visitors from the Federated States of Micronesia to apply for an electronic visa or visa waiver or eVisa for their country of destination.

An electronic travel visa authorization allows Micronesian citizens to obtain a travel document through an online application form. This procedure erases the need to apply in person from an embassy and wait in long queues upon arrival in the destination country.

Around 30 countries across the world currently offer an electronic travel visa authorization application for Micronesian passport holders.

Electronic travel documents for nationals of Micronesia can be approved as either single or multiple entry permits and may allow visitors to spend between 28 to 90 days in the country of destination.

Once approved, electronic travel visa authorizations are usually sent by email and are also often automatically linked to their passport. Therefore, it is usually necessary to travel with the same passport used to complete the online application. Travelers are also often recommended to print a paper copy.

ETIAS for Micronesian Passport Holders

Micronesian passport holders are currently able to travel to any European country that has signed the Schengen Agreement for short stays, without the need to obtain a visa or travel authorization.

In 2025,  this will change when the European Commission implements the ETIAS visa waiver program for visa-exempt nationals, to strengthen Schengen Area external borders.

ETIAS will be a travel authorization that grants holders multiple entries and permits a stay of 90 days per trip, within every 180-day period. It will permit travel for purposes of tourism, transit, business, or medical treatment.

To obtain an approved ETIAS, Micronesian citizens will have to complete a simple online application with personal, passport, and travel, and answer some security and health-related questions. The application should not take more than 10 minutes to complete.

Once approved, an ETIAS travel authorization will be automatically linked to the holder’s passport. It will be valid for a total of 3 years, or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first.

In these counties, travelers from the Federated States of Micronesia are able to go directly to a border entry point upon arrival to obtain a visa on arrival form from an immigration officer. To obtain this form, it is usually necessary to wait in line in an immigration queue.

After filling in the form, most visa on arrival countries require Micronesian citizens to pay a visa on arrival fee. Payment often must be made in cash and in the local currency.

Once the officers approve the travel document, it can be issued as either a single or multiple entry permit and allows visitors a stay from 7 days up to 3 months, depending on the destination.

Some countries that offer visa on arrival also permit Micronesian nationals to obtain an eVia before departure through an online application form, which eliminates the need to wait in line at border checkpoints.
