Visa Requirements for Citizens of Iraq

Read all about the visa requirements for nationals of Iraq to travel to any country across the globe.

Visa Requirements for Iraqi Citizens

Visa requirements for nationals of Iraq are administrative entry restrictions for citizens of Iraq imposed by the authorities of other sovereign states. On the Henley Passport Index, the Iraqi passport is ranked as the 106th in terms of travel freedom, as Iraqi nationals can travel to around 20 countries visa-free or without having to obtain a visa in advance.

On this page, Iraqi citizens planning a trip to a foreign country can check the visa requirements they need to meet and see if they need to obtain a travel document to gain entry to their destination country.

The visa requirements for Iraqi citizens vary depending on the purpose of the visit and the intended length of stay.

The visa-exempt countries for Iraqi passport holders usually allow visits for tourism, transit, or business purposes and for short stays that vary from a maximum of 21 days to 3 months.

For several other countries, although a regular visa is not necessary, Iraqi travelers are required to obtain an electronic visa (eVisa) or an electronic travel authorization, which are easily obtained through an online application.

If an Iraqi national is planning a trip to certain visa-required countries, it is mandatory to apply for this authorization at the nearest embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

The same is true for Iraqi citizens who plan to stay for long periods in a visa-free country or travel to such a country for purposes other than those allowed without a visa, like work or study.

The visa required can differ between an electronic visa, a visa on arrival, or an embassy visa.

List of Visa Countries for Iraqi Passport Holders

Travelers with an Iraqi passport planning a trip to a foreign country that is not on the visa-free country list need to obtain a visa to do so.

Currently, there are over 220 countries across the world that require visitors from Iraq to hold a visa, no matter the purpose or the intended length of stay.

Iraqi travelers must obtain a visa that covers both the purpose of their visit and the length of time they intend to stay in the country. This may involve applying for a tourist visa, a business visa, or a transit visa, for example.

Depending on the country they plan to visit, it may be possible or necessary to apply for an electronic visa (eVisa) online. This is done by completing an online application form, which is typically quicker and more straightforward than applying for an embassy or consular visa.

However, for other countries, the only way to obtain a visa for Iraqi citizens is by attending an interview at a diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate).

There are some visa-required countries for Iraqi nationals that also offer a visa on arrival option. However, it is recommended to apply before departure to avoid any inconvenience and spare time.

Consult the map below to find out which type of travel authorization is needed to travel to your destination country.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization for Iraqi Citizens

An Electronic Travel Visa Authorization system allows Iraqi citizens to apply for either an electronic visa (eVisa) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) for their destination country.

An eTA is technically a visa waiver, but the online application process is very similar to that of an eVisa. Both types of electronic system avoid the need to go in person to an embassy or to wait in queues upon arrival.

Over 20 visa-required countries have either an eVisa or an eTA available for travelers from Iraq, in order to expedite the process to obtain the correct travel authorization before departure.

Many eVisa and eTA systems grant visitors from Iraq multiple entries and allow them to stay between 1 and 3 months for purposes like tourism, business, or transit. This authorization is usually also valid for several years, which makes it possible to use the same document to travel several times.

To obtain an eVisa or eTA, applicants need to complete an application form with personal, passport, and travel information. Additionally, there are usually some security-related questions.

Once approved, the eVisa is electronically linked to the applicant’s passport and a copy is sent to the email address. Iraqi nationals are recommended to print a paper copy to avoid complications.

See below a list of the countries that Iraqi citizens can travel to by submitting an eVisa or eTA.

Visa on Arrival for Citizens of Iraq

visa on arrival for Iraqi travelers is another type of visa that Iraqi citizens can obtain to enter certain countries. As the name suggests, these visas are applied for and granted when the traveler arrives at an immigration checkpoint at the border.

Iraqi nationals are currently eligible for a visa on arrival to enter around 20 countries around the globe.

Once Iraqi visitors arrive at the border of these countries, they can stand in line to obtain an application form for a visa on arrival from an immigration officer. This usually involves a lengthy wait in the queue, before completing the form and waiting for it to be processed.

The visa on arrival form needs to be completed with personal, passport, and travel information. Visa requirements of these countries also state that there is a visa on arrival fee to be paid and it is usually only accepted in cash and in the local currency.

A visa on arrival for citizens of Iraq can be approved either as a single or multiple entry authorization with a permitted stay of between 7 days and 3 months, depending on the country.

Some of the countries where Iraqi citizens can apply for a visa on arrival also have an eVisa application option. Travelers are recommended to apply before departure as a visa on arrival is not always approved.

Embassy Visa Required for Iraqi Nationals

An embassy or consular visa is another kind of travel document that Iraqi citizens may need to obtain in order to enter many countries.

Currently, Iraqi passport holders need to apply for an embassy visa in order to gain entry to over 190 countries, regardless of the purpose of the visit or the intended length of stay.

A consular visa can be approved for a range of different periods of stay. Depending on the country, embassy visas may grant a single entry or multiple entries.

Embassies can grant any type of visa for Iraqi nationals, including residence visaswork visas, and study visas. In order to obtain permission to live and work in almost any country, it is necessary to obtain the relevant visa from an embassy.

In order to obtain this type of travel document, Iraqi nationals are requested to make a visa appointment at the nearest government office of their destination country.

It is recommended to schedule this interview several weeks before the expected departure date as it can take several weeks to process a consular visa.

Individuals need to deliver a completed embassy visa form, alongside with additional supporting documentation, depending on the purpose of the visit and the expected length of stay. Finally, a consular visa fee needs to be paid.
