The Papua New Guinea visa policy determines which foreign citizens need a visa for the country and whether they need to apply for a visa for Papua New Guinea online or from an embassy or consulate.

Tourist Visa Policy for Papua New Guinea

The tourist visa policy of Papua New Guinea states that all travelers from other countries must have a valid visa to enjoy a tourism stay in the independent state, regardless of the length of their intended trip.

Although a visa on arrival for Papua New Guinea is available for a select number of foreign citizens, these same nationalities are able to apply for a tourist visa for Papua New Guinea online, a process which greatly expedites the application and removes the need to wait in long border lines at immigration control.

Available through a simple electronic application that only takes a few minutes to complete, an approved PNG eVisa may allow a tourist stay of either 60 or 30 days depending on the requirements of the individual.

Once approved, an Papua New Guinea eVisa for tourism is sent to the traveler via email, and can then be printed to present to border authorities on arrival.

While roughly 75 nationalities are able to apply online, citizens of approximately 170 other countries must apply for a Papua New Guinea tourist visa from an embassy or consulate of the country. An embassy visa application must be initiated well in advance of travel to allow for sufficient processing time.

EVISA

The eVisa for Papua New Guinea, also known as the PNG eVisa, is an electronic visa that allows stays in the country for tourism and leisure, to visit relatives or friends, or for business purposes.

A Papua New Guinea eVisa application can also be submitted to apply for a Restricted Employment Visa (REV), which allows international workers with specialist skills and technical expertise to undertake employment in the country.

The eVisa was first implemented in November 2018 to expedite the application process for visa on arrival-eligible nationalities for Papua New Guinea, as it removes any long waits when passing through border checkpoints in the country. In July 2019, all countries which are part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) were added to the eVisa-eligible list.

A PNG eVisa can be obtained by completing a simple electronic application that only takes a few minutes to complete with basic personal, passport, and travel information. Applicants must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of arrival in Papua New Guinea and upload a copy of the passport biographical information page.

Once processed and approved, which takes a maximum of 3 business days, the applicant receives their PNG online visa sent by email.

Online visas for Papua New Guinea for tourism allow a stay of either 60 or 30 days, while the business visa permits a maximum 30-day stay. Both of these electronic visa options permit a single entry to the country during their validity. An online transit visa is not required if the passenger remains in the airport’s international transit area no longer than 8 hours.

Embassy or Consular Visa Required

Papua New Guinea rules and regulations for immigration currently identify approximately 170 nationalities who must obtain a visa from an embassy or consulate in order to travel to the country, independent of the time the traveler intends to stay or the purpose of the visit.

These passport holders must apply for a Papua New Guinea visa well in advance of their planned travel dates, whether they require a tourism visa, transit visa, business visa, work visa, student visa or other visa type.

The protocol of obtaining a Consular or Embassy Visa for the independent state first involves making an appointment at the nearest Papua New Guinea diplomatic government office in the country where the traveler is resident.

During the process, it will be necessary to complete a Papua New Guinea visa application form and bring a range of supporting documentation along to the embassy interview. The documents required will depend on the type of embassy visa the individual requires.

It will also be necessary to pay a PNG travel visa processing fee at the embassy before the application can be processed.
