| Post byThe Brazilian government has once again postponed the reinstatement of visa requirements for nationals of Australia, Canada, and the United States.
Previously set to be implemented on October 1, 2023, the requirement will now come into effect on January 10, 2024. This means that the visa exemption for these nationalities will remain valid until January 9, 2024. This includes those who plan to depart Brazil after this date.
To enter Brazil on or after January 10, 2024, travelers from the specified countries will need to obtain a visa to travel to Brazil.
It’s important to note that while Japan was originally included in the visa revocation list, a visa waiver agreement has since been announced between Brazil and Japan. This means that the visa requirement for Japanese nationals entering Brazil will no longer apply.
Previous Changes to Brazil’s Visa Exemption Policy
The decision to reinstate the visa requirement was officially made on May 2, 2023, when the Brazilian government published Decree No.11,515. This decree initially stated that the visa requirement for visitors from Australia, Canada, and the U.S. would come into effect on October 1, 2023.
This has since been extended into 2024, to allow citizens of these countries to enjoy visa-free travel to Brazil for longer.
Brazil’s visa agreement with Japans remains
The new measure only applies to Australian, Canadian, and U.S. citizens. For Japanese citizens, there is now a long-term visa exemption agreement between Brazil and Japan.
The bilateral agreement allows Japanese citizens to travel to Brazil without a visa and stay for up to 90 days. It’s provisionally until September 29, 2026, however it could become indefinite.
Under this new policy between the 2 countries, Brazilian passport holders can also travel to Japan without a visa.
Will the Selected Nationalities Be Eligible for the Brazil eVisa?
The Brazil eVisa platform is expected to be operational at least 30 days before the enforcement of the visa requirement, allowing eligible travelers to request their eVisas in advance.
Additionally, the Brazilian Embassy may grant physical visas to Australian passport holders on an exceptional basis.
While this extension provides temporary relief for travelers from the Australia, Canada, and the U.S., it’s advisable to stay updated on any further changes and prepare for the upcoming visa requirements.
