Lithuania Visa Policy

Learn about the visa policy of Lithuania and whether or not you need a visa to travel to the country.

Visa Policy for Lithuania

The Lithuanian visa policy establishes if a foreign citizen needs a visa or not to enter the country. The visa requirements vary depending on nationality, as well as the purpose of the travel and the expected period of stay.

As Lithuania has signed the Schengen Agreement for passport-free travel alongside 25 other European countries, it shares the common Schengen visa policy.

More than 90 nationalities are currently able to gain entry to Lithuania and the other Schengen Area countries without a visa for varying periods of stay depending on their nationality.

Citizens of any Schengen country are able to enjoy freedom of movement to Lithuania and don’t need to obtain a visa. They are only required to present a National ID card at border control.

All other visa-exempt travelers are able to present a valid passport upon arrival to gain entry to Lithuania for a stay up to 90 days and for one of the permitted purposes for visa-free travel.

However, a new requirement for visa-exempt visitors from outside the Schengen zone will come into effect from 2025. This new regulation will require visa-free third nationals to pre-register for an electronic authorization (ETIAS) before traveling to Lithuania and any other Schengen country.

This online visa waiver for Lithuania is being implemented to strengthen external European borders. An approved ETIAS authorization will allow the holder to travel to all countries in the Schengen Area for multiple short stays during its validity, for tourism, business, medical or transit purposes.

All foreign citizens who are not visa-exempt for Lithuania will be required to apply for an embassy visa from a Lithuanian diplomatic government office in advance, no matter the duration and purpose of the stay.

Below you can find a complete list of visa requirements to travel to Lithuania from your country.

Tourist Visa Policy for Lithuania

Some foreign citizens who wish to travel to Lithuania for tourist reasons can travel visa-free, while citizens of other countries must obtain a visa in advance.

According to the Lithuanian visa policy, there are currently about 90 countries that can travel to Lithuania without a visa for tourism, and many of them also belong to the Schengen Area.

However, from 2025, all visa-free citizens from outside the Schengen zone will need to pre-register for ETIAS online to visit Lithuania for a short stay for tourism.

This online visa waiver is a multiple entry travel authorization that is being implemented to enhance the security of the borders of the Schengen Area. It will allow multiple short stays in Lithuania during its validity, for a maximum stay of 90 days with each entry.

The Lithuanian visa policy also states that citizens of 150 other countries must obtain a tourist visa at an embassy or consulate in advance.

This involves making a consular appointment at an overseas diplomatic mission of Lithuania, at least a few weeks before the trip to allow sufficient processing time.

ETIAS for Lithuania

The ETIAS travel authorization for Lithuania will be implemented in 2025 and will become a mandatory requirement for all visa-free citizens to visit the country for a short stay.

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. By pre-screening all applicants in the EU-LISA-managed security database, this electronic visa waiver system will allow authorities to further enhance border protection in the Schengen Area.

An approved ETIAS is a multi-entry travel authorization that will grant the holder entry to all European states in the Schengen Area during its period of validity.

ETIAS permits a total stay of 90 days with each entry and can be used for tourist travel, transit, business, or medical treatment. The authorization is valid for 3 years from the date of issuance or until the associated passport expires.

To obtain an ETIAS visa waiver, eligible citizens will need to complete a simple online application with basic biographical, passport, and travel details. It is also necessary to answer some security questions and pay an ETIAS application fee before submitting the form.

Once approved, an ETIAS authorization is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport, which must be valid for at least 3 months from the expected arrival date in the Schengen Area.

Visa Not Required

The Lithuanian visa policy states that there are currently more than 90 countries that can enter Lithuania without a visa.

All citizens of the member states of the Schengen area only need to present a valid identity card at an immigration checkpoint to enter Lithuania without a passport indefinitely for any purpose.

Passengers from all other countries that have a visa-free agreement with Lithuania must have a passport valid for at least 3 months from the scheduled arrival date to cross its borders for a maximum stay of up to 90 days.

However, from 2025, these passport holders must obtain an approved ETIAS travel authorization to visit Lithuania for the same period of time.

ETIAS will be available through a simple electronic application which will only take a few minutes to fill in and submit.

Once approved, an ETIAS for Lithuania is digitally linked to the traveler’s passport and valid for 3 years or until the same passport expires. It allows multiple entries of 90 days each during its validity and permits travel for purposes of tourism, business, medical treatment, or transit.

In order to visit Lithuania for other purposes or longer periods of stay, ETIAS-eligible citizens are required to apply for a Schengen visa at the nearest Lithuanian overseas government office.
