In 2025, the European Union will introduce ETIAS, a new Travel Information and Authorisation System. ETIAS will become a requirement to travel to Sweden and most European countries. Once available, you will be able to find more information on this website. The European Union official website is https://european-union.europa.eu/, and a specific ETIAS website will soon be launched.

ETIAS Sweden Information

ETIAS for Sweden is a travel information and authorization system expected to be implemented in 2025. From this date, visa-exempt foreign citizens for Europe will be required to have an approved ETIAS visa waiver for Sweden in order to travel to Sweden and Schengen Area countries for short stays.

As it will be a multiple-entry travel authorization, ETIAS Sweden will allow multiple entries to the Schengen passport-free zone for purposes of transit, tourism, business, or medical treatment.

With each entry to the Schengen zone, the European visa waiver for Sweden allows a total stay of 90 days within every 180-day period. The ETIAS will be valid for a total of 3 years from the date of approval.

The ETIAS for Sweden is not a visa; this electronic travel authorization is simply an additional entry requirement for visitors from visa-free countries. As opposed to the lengthier Sweden visa application process, the ETIAS is a quick online registration.

The European Commission is making it mandatory for visa waiver citizens to apply for the ETIAS to Sweden in order to strengthen Schengen Area borders and improve security within Europe.

Eligible travelers will be able to fill in the simple ETIAS Sweden application form online in just a few minutes. Applicants are required to provide basic personal and passport information, state the Schengen country of first intended entry, and answer a few security-related questions to complete the ETIAS application for Sweden and receive an approved ETIAS via email.

Those wishing to visit Sweden for purposes other than those permitted with the ETIAS, such as to work or study, should contact the nearest Swedish Embassy or Consulate for further information.

ETIAS Requirements for traveling to Sweden

Before submitting an ETIAS application form for Sweden, applicants should make sure they meet the Sweden ETIAS visa waiver requirements for travel documents. It is necessary to have a passport from an ETIAS eligible country valid for at least 3 months past the intended date of entry to Sweden and the Schengen zone, as well as:

  • A valid debit/credit card to pay the ETIAS for Sweden fee
  • A current email address to which the approved Swedish ETIAS will be sent.

Applicants with dual nationality should make sure they bring the correct passport when traveling to the Schengen Area, as ETIAS requirements for Sweden state the passport must be the same as that used to apply for the ETIAS. This is because the approved ETIAS Sweden is electronically linked to an individual travel document.

Printing a copy of the approved visa waiver is not a mandatory ETIAS requirement for traveling to Sweden, although applicants are advised to present a paper copy when boarding their aircraft to the Schengen Area.

If the applicant’s passport expires during the validity of the ETIAS for Sweden, it will be necessary to submit a new ETIAS application to continue to travel to the Schengen Area.

The European Commission may announce further requirements for an ETIAS for Sweden closer to the November 2025 launch date. These will be published on this site once available.

Schengen Visa Application Requirements for Sweden

Those not eligible to apply for the ETIAS Sweden need a visa for Sweden to travel to the country. As Sweden is part of the EU and the Schengen Area, it shares the same visa policy as the other 25 Schengen countries. Therefore, Sweden visa requirements are the same as the requirements for a Schengen visa (embassy visa).

Unlike the ETIAS, which permits travel to all of the Schengen Area during its validity, a Schengen visa is normally issued for one individual Schengen country. To apply for a Swedish Schengen visa, it is necessary to make an appointment at the nearest embassy or consulate of Sweden.

Applicants are required to download, print, and complete a Sweden visa application form to bring to the embassy appointment, alongside the following supporting documents:

  • A passport valid for at least 3 months from the intended entry date to Sweden
  • Two recent photographs taken within the last 3 months, passport-size
  • Proof of return flights
  • Evidence of sufficient finances for the trip
  • Proof of travel insurance to cover the stay
  • Evidence of having paid the Sweden Schengen visa fee
  • Hotel reservations in Sweden or an invitation letter from family or friends.

It is also necessary to supply the following additional documentation depending on the type of Schengen visa for Sweden the applicant requires:

  • Sweden tourist visa – Travel itinerary
  • Swedish Schengen study visa – Letter of acceptance from an educational institute in Sweden
  • Schengen work visa for Sweden – Contract of employment from Swedish company
  • Schengen visa to join a spouse in Sweden – Copy of the marriage certificate and the spouse’s passport
  • Schengen medical visa for Sweden – Letter from a medical practitioner in home country AND letter confirming medical treatment in Sweden.

As it can take up to 15 days for processing, those who apply for a visa for Sweden at an embassy or consulate are required to submit the application at least 2 weeks before the intended entry date to the Schengen Area.
