Visa Requirements for Myanmar Citizens

Visa requirements for Myanmar citizens are administrative entry restrictions placed on nationals of Myanmar by the authorities of other countries around the world.

The Myanmar passport is currently ranked 96th on the Henley passport index, which measures travel freedom among the passports of the world.

Citizens of Myanmar are currently granted visa-free access, or entry with a visa on arrival, to around 35 countries and territories worldwide.

Myanmar passport holders are able to travel to around 10 countries without a visa for certain periods of stay, including to the other member states of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) such as Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Nationals of Myanmar are able to gain visa-exempt entry to ASEAN countries and other visa-free destinations by simply presenting a valid passport at border controls. For most of these destinations, travelers from Myanmar can enjoy a visa-free stay of between 14-90 days.

To travel to other countries, it is necessary to meet the mandatory visa requirements for Myanmar nationals. In some cases, it is possible to obtain an electronic travel visa authorization online before visiting the destination, for over 30 countries worldwide.

This process is by far the most convenient way to obtain a visa for travelers from Myanmar, as it eliminates the need to present embassy visa paperwork in person at a diplomatic mission of the destination, or the need to wait in long queues to submit a visa on arrival.

List of Visa Countries for Myanmar Passport Holders

Although there are a number of countries that permit visa-free access, it will be necessary to meet mandatory visa requirements for Myanmar citizens before traveling to other territories no matter the length and purpose of the intended stay.

There are currently around 25 countries that permit passport holders of Myanmar to obtain a visa on arrival for short stays at border checkpoints of the country. However, it is usually necessary to wait in long immigration queues upon arrival to submit this type of application.

If the option is available for the country of destination, travelers from Myanmar are advised to submit an electronic travel visa authorization application. This process can be completed exclusively online and often involves far less processing time than that needed for an embassy visa.

However, as most eVisas and electronic travel authorizations only permit short stays in the destination for tourism, transit, or business, it will be necessary to obtain a visa from an embassy to visit these countries for purposes such as to work and study.

Additionally, there are around 180 countries worldwide that require Myanmar passport holders to obtain a visa from an embassy or consulate regardless of the intended purpose of the travel or length of stay.

The different visa types and entry options for travelers from Myanmar are outlined below.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization

There are currently over 30 countries that offer an Electronic Travel Visa Authorization option to travelers from Myanmar.

The protocol of obtaining an eVisa or online visa waiver greatly speeds up the application process and often involves reduced processing and waiting times compared to embassy visas or visas on arrival.

To submit an electronic visa waiver or eVisa application online from Myanmar, it is usually only necessary to complete a simple form with basic passport information, personal details, and travel plans.

Most eVisa and digital visa waiver applications are quickly processed, and many approved online travel visa authorizations are electronically linked to the traveler’s passport, eliminating the need to print a paper document.

Electronic travel visa authorizations for Myanmar nationals permit either single or multiple-entry short stays for between 30-180 days depending on the destination and are most usually issued for tourist visits, or for business or transit.

To visit these countries for other purposes such as to undertake work or to study, it is usually necessary to apply for a visa from the nearest diplomatic government office of the destination.

Visa on Arrival

There are currently 25 visa on arrival countries for Myanmar citizens. A visa on arrival is a type of travel document which can be obtained at border control points of certain destinations.

The protocol of applying for this document involves waiting in an immigration queue upon arrival to be handed a form by border control authorities. This application form must then be completed with the traveler’s personal and passport information.

It is also usually necessary to pay a visa on arrival application fee to submit a form. This payment is often requested in cash and in the local currency, as credit and debit cards are not accepted in many cases.

Visas on arrival for Myanmar passport holders usually permit the holder a stay of between 7-120 days for the purposes of tourism, business or trade, or to transit.

Some countries that offer a visa on arrival program also permit citizens from Myanmar to obtain an eVisa through an electronic application.

We recommend this option if it is available for the destination, as it greatly reduces waiting times in immigration lines when arriving at the border, and also guarantees approval in advance.

Countries which offer visa on arrival, eVisa, or visa-free access to Myanmar nationals for short stays also oblige citizens of Myanmar to apply for an embassy visa in order to cross their borders for longer stays or purposes not permitted with these entry types.

A visa from an embassy may be issued for a variety of purposes, whether the traveler is visiting for tourism, business, transit, to work or study, or for permanent residency. They are issued for a range of different periods of stay.

The process of obtaining an embassy visa for citizens of Myanmar usually involves first making an appointment at the nearest government diplomatic office of the destination and preparing a range of different supporting documents depending on the type of visa required.
