Visa Requirements for Citizens of Liechtenstein

Find out the visa requirements for Liechtensteiners to travel to any country in the world.

Visa Requirements for Liechtenstein Citizens

Visa requirements for Liechtensteiners are the laws for entering other countries that specify if citizens of Liechtenstein need a visa and, if so, which type.

The Liechtenstein passport is ranked 12th in the world in terms of travel freedom in 2021 by the Henley Passport Index. It allows holders to visit around 180 destinations without having to apply for an embassy or consular visa in advance.

Some countries’ visa requirements for Liechtenstein citizens depend on factors such as how long the individual plans to stay and the purpose of the trip.

Many destinations have different visa requirements for Liechtensteiners who plan to live, work, or stay long-term than for visitors.

Nationals of Liechtenstein can apply online for a travel permit for a number of countries. Depending on the destination, these are either an electronic visa (eVisa) or electronic travel authorization (eTA). The latter is a visa waiver.

Both types of system are similar. The Liechtensteiner traveler must complete a quick online form and will receive their eVisa or eTA approval by email. These are regarded as the most convenient form of travel permit for citizens of Liechtenstein.

Certain countries have a visa on arrival service that Liechtensteiners can use. This involves standing in line at border control to apply for a visa.

Liechtenstein nationals are required to apply for a visa at an embassy or consulate to visit certain countries. In addition, residence and work visas/permits for most destinations can only be obtained at one of these diplomatic missions.

Citizens of Liechtenstein may travel to some destinations visa-free. The terms of this visa exemption vary depending on the country.

List of Visa Countries for Liechtensteiner Passport Holders

Holders of passports issued by the Principality of Liechtenstein require a visa or travel authorization to visit around 140 different countries worldwide.

Some of these destinations have an electronic visa (eVisa) or electronic travel authorization (eTA) for Liechtensteiners to apply online. This enables visitors from the Principality to get an entry permit from the comfort of their own homes.

Citizens of Liechtenstein can obtain a visa on arrival for certain countries. However, this has certain drawbacks, such as spending a long time waiting at immigration and the risk of being turned away in the event of a problem with the application.

As a rule, eVisas, eTAs, and visas on arrival for Liechtensteiners allow short-term stays for tourism and leisure. Some also permit business trips, transit, and/or other purposes.

Long-term visas for Liechtenstein nationals to live and/or work in most countries must be obtained by applying at an embassy or consulate.

In addition, a number of countries’ visa requirements for citizens of Liechtenstein dictate that all types of visa must be applied for at an embassy. This includes short-term tourist visas.

The terms of visas for Liechtensteiners can vary, with some granting a single entry and others allowing multiple entries.

Consult the map below to find out if a visa is required for Liechtensteiners to visit different countries around the world and which type is needed for a visit.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization for Citizens of Liechtenstein

Liechtensteiners can apply online for a digital entry permit to visit around 40 countries.

There are 2 types: electronic visas (eVisas) and electronic travel authorizations (eTAs).

An eVisa for citizens of Liechtenstein is classified as a visa. Rather than applying at a diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate), Liechtensteiners can fill in a form online.

An eTA for Liechtenstein nationals is a digital visa waiver. It allows the holder to enter the destination without a visa, providing they register online beforehand.

In practice, both types of electronic permit are similar. In both cases, Liechtensteiners must complete a questionnaire via the internet and will receive notice of their authorization to travel by email.

In some cases, the eVisa or eTA must be printed and presented upon arrival (this is advisable in any case). Others are electronically linked to the traveler’s Liechtenstein passport and will be read when the passport is scanned at border control.

An eTA or eVisa for Liechtensteiners is generally valid for short visits for the purposes of tourism and leisure. Some countries also permit other activities, such as business trips, medical treatment, and transit with an online visa or travel authorization.

The maximum length of time that a citizen of Liechtenstein can stay in a country with an eVisa or eTA varies between 16 days and 3 months.

See below the list of countries and territories that Liechtensteiners can visit with an eVisa or eTA.

Visa On Arrival for Liechtensteiners

A visa on arrival (VoA) for citizens of Liechtenstein is a visa that is applied for and issued at border control when entering a foreign country or territory.

Around 20 different destinations have a visa on arrival for Liechtenstein nationals.

Liechtensteiners can use a VoA to enter a foreign country for a maximum stay of 7 days to 3 months, depending on the destination.

VoAs for Liechtenstein citizens typically allow entry for tourism and, in some cases, business, transit, and other purposes. They do not grant the holder permission to live or perform employed work.

Visas on arrival for Liechtensteiners are usually only available at select airports, seaports, and border crossing points. Depending on the country, it may be necessary to pay in cash in the local currency.

There are often long lines at border control to apply for a VoA. Liechtensteiners must be prepared to spend some time waiting before being allowed to enter the country.

Travelers from Liechtenstein should also ensure that they have all the necessary supporting documents for their visa application on hand. The drawback of the VoA is that if there is any problem, there is no time to resolve it. The traveler will simply be denied entry and will have to return home.

For these reasons, it is recommended to apply for an eVisa in advance if this is possible.

Embassy Visa Required for Nationals of Liechtenstein

An embassy or consular visa for Liechtensteiner travelers is one that is obtained at a diplomatic mission.

Around 80 different countries and territories require Liechtensteiners to apply for a visa at an embassy or consulate. This includes tourist visas and other short-stay permits.

In addition, the immigration requirements for citizens of Liechtenstein moving to most foreign countries state that the relevant long-term visa, residence permit, and/or work visa must be obtained at an embassy.

There are no foreign embassies in Liechtenstein itself. However, there are various Honorary Consulates. Most are located in Vaduz and Schaan, with some in other municipalities, such as Ruggell and Triesen.

There are also many embassies located in other European capitals close to Liechtenstein, including Bern, Vienna, and Berlin. Various missions are based in Geneva in nearby Switzerland.

To apply for an embassy or consular visa, it is usually necessary for the traveler to go to the mission in person. They must submit a completed form and the necessary supporting documents.

Unlike their online counterparts, some embassies and consulates take weeks or even months to process visa requests from Liechtensteiners, so it is advisable to apply well in advance.

Visa Not Required for Liechtensteiners

Liechtensteiners do not need a visa to travel to over 100 different countries.

In most cases, this visa exemption for holders of Liechtenstein passports extends to short-term stays.

In most cases, citizens of Liechtenstein can stay in a foreign country for a maximum period of between 15 days and 1 year without a visa, depending on the state in question.

Generally speaking, Liechtenstein nationals can go on holiday to one of these foreign countries without a visa. They can also transit through the country to a third destination visa-free. In some cases, they may also engage in business activities.

Citizens of Liechtenstein are not allowed to live or work in most of these locations without a visa.

However, in the case of European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states, Liechtenstein nationals enjoy freedom of movement (more information below).
