Visa Requirements for Citizens of Ethiopia

Find out what you need to know about visa requirements for Ethiopians to enter various countries and territories worldwide.

Visa Requirements for Ethiopian Citizens

Each country around the world has its own list of visa requirements for Ethiopian citizens — regulations that determine if, and in what circumstances, a national of Ethiopia needs a visa or travel authorization to enter.

The Ethiopian passport is ranked 95th in the Henley Passport Index’s list of the world’s strongest passports, permitting access to 44 destinations without having to apply for a visa in person at an embassy before traveling.

The visa requirements for citizens of Ethiopia to enter a particular country or territory often depend on the purpose of the trip and the length of time the Ethiopian traveler plans to spend there.

For example, some countries have online platforms for Ethiopian nationals to obtain an electronic visa (eVisa) or electronic travel authorization (eTA) for short stays as a tourist, while individuals who plan to stay in the country long-term and/or live and work there must go through the longer process of applying for residence and work visas at an embassy.

Certain destinations permit Ethiopians to enter visa-free, at least for short visits, while the majority require Ethiopian nationals to obtain a visa before arriving at the border.

Some countries and territories also have the option to apply for a visa on arrival, although this comes with certain drawbacks, such as having to queue at border control.

Citizens of Ethiopia should check the visa requirements for their destination before traveling abroad and ensure that they have the correct authorization to cross the border.

List of Visa Countries for Ethiopia Passport Holders

Ethiopian passport holders need the relevant type(s) of visa to live and work in the majority of foreign countries. Residence visas, long-stay visas, and work visas for Ethiopians must be obtained at the embassy of the country to which they intend to relocate.

For short stays, some countries have visa requirements for Ethiopia passport holders, while a small number have no entry requirements, meaning that Ethiopians can visit visa-free.

Ethiopian nationals need a visa to enter over 230 countries for short-term visits. Most of these require travelers from Ethiopia to obtain their visit visa from an embassy or consulate.

Certain destinations permit Ethiopians to fill out an online application to receive an eVisa or eTA, rather than an embassy visa. In some cases, eVisas and eTAs are only valid for visits for tourism, while others permit more purposes of visit, such as business, transit, and medical treatment.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization for Citizens of Ethiopia

Ethiopian nationals are eligible to apply online for either an electronic visa (eVisa) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to gain permission to enter certain countries.

Digital eVisa and eTA platforms allow Ethiopian citizens to avoid an unnecessary trip to an embassy or consulate to apply for a visa in person, while providing the peace of mind of having entry authorization prior to arriving at the border of the destination country.

An eVisa for citizens of Ethiopia is a visa that is obtained online and must either be printed or is electronically linked to the individual’s passport, depending on the country.

An eTA for Ethiopian travelers is an online visa waiver system that permits nationals of Ethiopia to enter the destination country without a visa, providing that they register their details with the eTA system prior to their arrival.

In practice, both systems are similar and usually only authorize Ethiopian nationals to travel for the purpose of tourism and, in some cases, business. Certain countries also require Ethiopians to carry an eVisa or eTA to transit through their territory.

The maximum length of time a citizen of Ethiopia can stay in a foreign country with an eVisa or eTA varies depending on the country, with most being either 30-31 days (one month) or 90 days (3 months).

Around 25 destinations currently have an eVisa or eTA system that Ethiopian travelers can use to visit.

See below the list of countries that citizens of Ethiopia can travel to using an eVisa or eTA.

Visa On Arrival for Ethiopians

A visa on arrival for nationals of Ethiopia is an option offered by certain countries, in which the traveler can apply for a visa at border control at designated airports, seaports, and/or land border checkpoints.

Over 25 different countries and territories have a visa on arrival option available to Ethiopian visitors.

In most cases, visas on arrival for citizens of Ethiopia are only granted for short stays for the purpose of tourism.

The maximum length of time a visitor from Ethiopia can stay with a visa on arrival varies between 7 and 90 days, depending on the country.

After arriving at the border, Ethiopian travelers must join the queue for visas on arrival and wait in line to fill out an application form and submit their supporting documents.

The drawback of this type of visa is that if there is a problem with their passport or another part of the application and entry is denied, they will be forced to return home. Therefore, if there is also an option to apply for an eVisa or eTA online beforehand, this is highly recommended, allowing time to resolve any problems in the application in the unlikely event that it cannot be processed immediately.

Embassy Visa Required for Ethiopians

Embassy visas or consular visas for Ethiopian passport holders are visas that are obtained from a diplomatic mission belonging to the destination country.

Over 180 countries and territories around the globe require citizens of Ethiopia to apply for a visa in person at an embassy for any type or length of visit. This includes short-term visits for tourism and business.

In addition, Ethiopians who plan to relocate to another country, perform employed work on foreign soil, or remain abroad for long periods of time will have to obtain the relevant visa from an embassy for any destination. This may include a long-stay visa, a residence visa/permit, and/or a work visa/permit for the country in question.

Applying for an embassy visa for Ethiopian nationals involves completing an application form, submitting supporting documents and, in some cases, being interviewed.

Ethiopian travelers are advised to apply for an embassy visa in good time before the intended date of travel, since they usually take longer to process than online visas. Depending on the country, it may take several weeks to receive an approved embassy or consular visa.

Visa Unavailable

There is only one country that citizens of Ethiopia cannot travel to at present: Kuwait.

Kuwait currently maintains travel bans for nationals of a number of countries, including Ethiopia. This means that visa applications will not be approved and travel authorization will not be issued to anyone with an Ethiopian passport.

It may be possible to visit Kuwait with a passport issued by another country, in the case that the Ethiopian has dual-nationality.

The situation may change in the future.
