Visa Requirements for Danish Citizens

Visa requirements for Danish passport holders are administrative entry restrictions placed by other countries on visitors from the Kingdom of Denmark. This includes citizens from Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.

The Henley Passport Index currently ranks the Danish passport in the 5th position as the most powerful in terms of travel freedom. Danish citizens are able to travel visa-free or with a visa on arrival to around 140 countries worldwide.

Depending on the traveler’s country of destination, the purpose of the visit, and the intended length of stay, the visa requirements may vary.

If Danish citizens are planning a trip to a visa-required country they need to confirm which kind of visa they need according to their needs. This can vary between a visa on arrival submitted at border checkpoints, an electronic visa applied for through an online application form, and an embassy visa requested in person at a government office.

Visa-exempt countries allow Danish passport holders to spend short periods of stay, between 15 days up to 6 months, most commonly for purposes like tourism, to transit onward to another destination, or business.

Furthermore, Non-EU residents of Denmark traveling to another Schengen Area country have freedom of movement by presenting a valid passport or ID Card.

Although a visa is not requested to gain entry to some visa-free countries, Danish residents may need to submit an electronic travel authorization application before departure.

Travelers can discover these requirements by browsing the following boxes on this page.

List of Visa Countries for Danish Passport Holders

Danish passport holders are able to gain entry to several countries without a visa. Furthermore, as a member of the Schengen Area, Danish citizens have complete freedom of movement within these countries.

However, in order to be able to travel to, enter, and remain in other countries, they will need to meet some visa requirements. Danish nationals currently need to hold a travel authorization or visa to travel to around 130 countries.

To travel to around 70 countries, Danish residents are required to apply for a travel authorization through a diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) of their destination country.

An embassy visa is usually required when the traveler’s intention is to work, reside, or study in a foreign country.

For another 30 countries, an eVisa (electronic visa) or ETA (electronic travel authorization) is available through an easy and quick online application form. These systems are implemented to increase the border protection of the country and their visitors and to optimize the application process.

Another kind of visa available for Danish travelers is a visa on arrival, which Danish passport holders do not need to apply for before traveling. They can obtain this travel document upon arrival at the immigration checkpoints at their destination. However, they should take into account the possibility of long queues at these border controls.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization systems for Danish citizens differs between two types of permits. According to visa requirements, they may need to apply for an eVisa (electronic visa) or for a visa waiver named eTA (electronic travel authorization).

Both systems are implemented to pre-screen any potential security or health risks, for visitors and for the destination country alike. They also simplify the process to obtain a travel authorization as it can be done from the home or office of the applicant.

This process is quick and easy as Danish travelers will only need to complete an online form with personal, passport, and travel information. They will also be required to provide a valid email address which will be used for all communications including sending travel visa authorization confirmations.

eVisas and eTAs are normally valid for purposes like tourism, transit, or business, and depending on the destination country, normally allow a permitted length of stay of between 14 days up to 3 months.

Once approved, these travel authorizations are linked electronically to the passport used by the applicant and a confirmation document is sent to the email address previously supplied. Danish citizens are recommended to print a paper copy and carry it alongside their passport.

Visa on Arrival

Another kind of visa available for Danish nationals is a visa on arrival, which can be obtained upon arrival at immigration checkpoints in around 20 countries.

Travelers using a Danish passport are required to go directly to border control where they will need to wait in line until an immigration officer gives them a visa on arrival form.

This form needs to be completed with basic personal, passport, and travel information. Finally, a visa on arrival fee is requested and is usually only accepted in cash and in the local currency.

This process usually takes longer than applying for an eVisa before departure and it does not always guarantee entry. Therefore, Danish citizens are recommended to apply, when applicable, through the online application form option.

Visas on arrival for Danish citizens are granted for purposes like tourism, transit, or business, with a permitted stay of between 1 up to 3 months.
