ETIAS Visa Waiver for Canadians

Canadian passport holders are currently able to travel to all of the European countries who have signed the Schengen visa-free agreement for short stays without first having to obtain a visa or a travel authorization.

However, in 2025 the visa policy of the Schengen countries will change. Canadians who wish to travel to Europe after this date will first be required to pre-register an online application for an ETIAS to enter Schengen borders.

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. This electronic visa waiver was approved by the European Parliament in 2016 and is being implemented to pre-screen visa-free travelers to the Schengen Area in order to strengthen European borders.

Canadian applicants for an ETIAS authorization will be required to complete a simple online form with basic personal and passport information, and answer a few security questions to submit the application.

An approved ETIAS visa waiver for Canadian citizens is linked electronically to the applicant’s passport and is a multiple entry travel authorization for Europe.

This means that holders of an approved ETIAS for Canadians are able to enter the Schengen Area multiple times during the 3-year validity of the visa waiver, or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first.

Travelers from Canada with an approved ETIAS may enter the Schengen zone for up to 90 days with each entry, for purposes of business, tourism, transit, or for medical treatment.

Canadian passport holders who citizens who wish to stay in the region for longer consecutive periods, or travel to work or study, should contact an embassy or consulate of the individual Schengen country they intended to visit.
