Visa Policy for Qatar

On this page you will be able to check the Qatar visa policy and confirm the visa requirements for your nationality to travel to the country.

The visa policy of Qatar is a set of regulations that define the requirements that citizens of another country need to meet in order to obtain a Qatari visa.

All foreign visitors to Qatar, whether they need a visa or not, should have a passport valid for at least 3 months from the date of arrival in the country.

There are some nationals that are exempt from obtaining a travel visa for Qatar, including all citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, who can use their National ID card to enjoy freedom of movement in the country.

Individuals from around 230 countries can apply for the Qatar eVisa, which can be obtained through a simple online application. This electronic visa type was implemented to eliminate the need to get an embassy visa for tourism in the country in person or wait in long border queues to obtain a visa on arrival

Electronically linked to the applicant’s passport upon approval, a tourist eVisa for Qatar allows the holder a total stay of up 30 days for leisure purposes. The visa may also be extended for an additional 30 days online, once the holder has entered Qatar and before expiry.

Visa-required foreign citizens not eligible for the online visa for Qatar, or those who wish to visit the country for purposes other than tourism, are required to apply for a visa from a Qatari embassy or consulate well in advance of the intended arrival date.

See below for a more detailed breakdown of all of the Qatar visa types.

Tourist Visa Policy for Qatar

Qatar’s tourist visa policy states that citizens of the 5 GCC countries may enter the country for tourism without a visa, simply by presenting a valid ID card at a border entry point.

All other foreign nationalities are required to obtain a visa for tourist travel to Qatar, whether an embassy visa or an electronic visa type.

Only citizens of a few countries, under 10 nationalities, are required to obtain a visa for tourism from an embassy or consulate in advance of traveling to Qatar.

All other visa-required nationalities may apply for a Qatar tourist eVisa through a simple online application form that can be completed in minutes from the comfort of their own home.

The online tourist visa for Qatar was implemented in 2017 to facilitate tourist visa applications and eliminate the long queues that previously formed for a visa on arrival.

The Qatar eVisa for tourism greatly speeds up entry into the country, as the approved visa is electronically linked to the holder’s passport, which then can be easily scanned by immigration officials upon arrival.

Embassy or Consular Visa Required

Quati visa law states that citizens of roughly 10 countries are required to obtain a visitor visa for the country in advance from an overseas diplomatic mission of Qatar.

These foreign passport holders must apply for a visa from the nearest embassy or consulate by making an appointment well in advance of travel, regardless of the purpose of visit and the duration of the intended stay.

It is usually necessary for Qatar embassy visa applicants to bring a completed application form to an approved embassy appointment, on which they must indicate the type of visa required for their stay.

An embassy visa for Qatar may be issued as either a tourist visa, business visa student visa, resident visa, work visa, or other visa option.

The applicant will need to present a valid passport, as well as a variety of supporting documentation depending io the type of visa they select. It is also necessary to pay an embassy visa fee before the application can be approved.

Applicants should keep in mind that it may take several weeks for a Qatari consular visa to be correctly processed and approved.

The visa policy of Qatar states that citizens of all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations enjoy freedom of movement in the country, and do not need a visa for Qatar under any circumstance.

Other than Qatar, the GCC member states are composed of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman,Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In order to gain access to Qatar, these visa-exempt nationals are simply able to present a valid national ID card at a Qatari border checkpoint.

Furthermore, all foreign nationals who are passing through Qatar on the way to an onward destination do not require a Qatari transit visa if they are transiting through Hamad International Airport and departing within 24 hours. However, those who wish to leave the airport are required to obtain a transit visa for Qatar to do so.

All international travelers arriving with Qatar Airways with a layover time between 5 and 96 hours are able to obtain a free visa for transit at Hamad International Airport.

However, all other visa-required passengers arriving at another airport or wishing to stay for longer periods will be required to obtain the relevant Qatari visa type to do.
