Luxembourg Visa Policy

Learn about Luxembourg visa policy and whether you need a visa to visit the country.

Visa Policy for Luxembourg

As Luxembourg is a member of the Schengen Area which has a shared passport-free travel agreement, the visa policy is the same as all of the other 25 Schengen countries.

Luxembourg visa policy establishes whether or not a foreign citizen needs a visa to enter the country, depending on nationality, as well as the purpose of the travel and the expected period of stay.

Nationals from over 150 countries need to hold an approved Schengen visa to gain entry to Luxembourg, regardless of the purpose or stay period.

This kind of visa must be obtained from an embassy or consulate of Luxembourg well in advance of the planned date of arrival in the country.

Citizens of over 90 countries are established as visa-exempt for Luxembourg and only need to present a valid passport, or a valid Schengen country ID card, to gain entry at Luxembourg’s borders.

Visitors from a Schengen country are granted freedom of movement to Luxembourg for an unlimited period by presenting their national ID document upon entry.

Other visa-free citizens currently simply need to present their passport to cross borders into Luxembourg. However, from 2025, an additional mandatory requirement will come into effect: holding an approved ETIAS travel authorization.

This compulsory online visa waiver is being implemented by the European Commission and will allow the holder to visit Luxembourg for multiple short stays during its validity. It will be available through a simple electronic application.

There are not currently any Luxembourg entry bans in place for any foreign citizens.

Tourist Visa Policy for Luxembourg

Foreign visitors planning a tourism trip to Luxembourg should first check the visa requirements they need to meet to be able to enter the country.

The tourist visa policy for Luxembourg and the requirements and restrictions vary according to the individual’s nationality and travel plans.

At the moment, nationals of 90 countries do not need a tourist visa or travel authorization to visit Luxembourg for varying periods of stay. They are able to simply present either a passport or Schengen national ID card to gain tourist entry to the country.

However, from 2025, all visa-exempt travelers from outside of the Schengen Area will be required to pre-register for an ETIAS online visa waiver in advance of travel to enter Luxembourg for the same periods of tourist stay.

This multiple entry tourist authorization will allow holders to enjoy multiple short stays for tourism in Luxembourg and any other Schengen country during its validity.

Citizens from around 150 other countries are required to apply for an embassy visa, also known as a Schengen visa, from a government office of Luxembourg in order to visit the country for tourism.

In order to apply for this multiple entry visa waiver, it will be necessary for eligible citizens to complete a simple online form with basic personal, passport, and travel information, as well as to answer some basic security questions before the application may be submitted.

Upon approval, an ETIAS for Luxembourg is electronically linked to the applicant’s passport. It permits multiple short stays of up to 90 days with each entry to Luxembourg and all of the other Schengen countries, for purposes of tourism, business, transit, or medical treatment.

ETIAS Luxembourg is valid for a total of 3 years from the moment of approval, or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first.

Visa Not Required

The visa policy of Luxembourg establishes that there are over 90 countries across the world whose citizens are visa not required for varying periods of stay.

Visitors holding a valid passport or ID Card issued by a Schengen Area member state are granted freedom of movement when arriving at border control in Luxembourg or any other Schengen country. They will only be requested to present one of both documents.

Visa-exempt citizens holding a passport from a non-Schengen country will be able to gain entry to Luxembourg by presenting this document upon arrival, for a short visa-free stay up to 90 days, for purposes such as tourism, business, transit, or medical treatment.

However, in 2025 it is expected that these same citizens will need to present an approved travel authorization (ETIAS) to gain entry for the same purposes and length of stay.

To do so, it will first be necessary to submit a Luxembourg ETIAS application online. This process only takes a few minutes to complete. Once approved, the travel authorization is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and valid for a total of 3 years.

However, if these same visa-exempt individuals need to visit any Schengen country for a longer period or other purposes, such as to study or work, they will need to submit an embassy visa application at a Luxembourg diplomatic government office.
