Luxembourg Visa Policy

As Luxembourg is a member of the Schengen Area which has a shared passport-free travel agreement, the visa policy is the same as all of the other 25 Schengen countries.

Luxembourg visa policy establishes whether or not a foreign citizen needs a visa to enter the country, depending on nationality, as well as the purpose of the travel and the expected period of stay.

Nationals from over 150 countries need to hold an approved Schengen visa to gain entry to Luxembourg, regardless of the purpose or stay period.

This kind of visa must be obtained from an embassy or consulate of Luxembourg well in advance of the planned date of arrival in the country.

Citizens of over 90 countries are established as visa-exempt for Luxembourg and only need to present a valid passport, or a valid Schengen country ID card, to gain entry at Luxembourg’s borders.

Visitors from a Schengen country are granted freedom of movement to Luxembourg for an unlimited period by presenting their national ID document upon entry.

Other visa-free citizens currently simply need to present their passport to cross borders into Luxembourg. However, from 2023, an additional mandatory requirement will come into effect: holding an approved ETIAS travel authorization.

This compulsory online visa waiver is being implemented by the European Commission and will allow the holder to visit Luxembourg for multiple short stays during its validity. It will be available through a simple electronic application.

There are not currently any Luxembourg entry bans in place for any foreign citizens.
