Latvia Visa Policy

Check below which type of visa for Latvia you need according to your nationality.

Visa policy for Latvia

The visa policy of Latvia dictates when and under which circumstances a traveler needs a visa in order to successfully enter the country.

These rules may differ depending on the nationality of passport the traveler is using, as well as the length and purpose of the intended stay.

At the moment all the countries inside the Schengen Area enjoy freedom of movement between member states, including Latvia. In order to cross Latvian borders, Schengen citizens are required to present a valid ID card at an immigration checkpoint, as a passport is not required.

All other visa-exempt nationals for Latvia, from outside the Schengen zone, must present a valid passport in order to gain access to Latvian borders for a stay not exceeding 90 days for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

Nevertheless, a new requirement will become mandatory for these visa-free citizens to travel to Latvia in 2025, when the ETIAS electronic travel authorization system is introduced for all Schengen countries.

Once the program is activated, all travelers with visa exemption will be required to pre-register for this electronic visa waiver through a simple online form.

All other foreign nationalities are required to obtain an embassy visa for Latvia (also known as a Latvian Schengen visa) in advance from a Latvian overseas diplomatic mission, no matter the duration or intended purpose of their visit.

To do so, it is usually necessary to make an appointment at a Latvian embassy or consulate well in advance of the intended dates of travel to Latvia, as it may take several weeks for the approved travel document to be processed and issued.

Lavtia does not currently impose any entry bans against any foreign citizen.

Tourist Visa Policy for Latvia

In this box, you can discover the specific policy to travel to Latvia for tourism for your nationality.

To travel to Latvia for tourism purposes, it may not be required to have a visa, or an approved tourist visa or travel authorization may be necessary depending on where the passport was issued.

Schengen Area citizens are granted passport-exempt freedom of movement to Latvia for tourism, simply by traveling with a valid ID card which they can present at Latvian border checkpoints.

Citizens of other visa-exempt countries for Latvia are required to present a valid passport when entering the country, and are granted a maximum tourist stay of up to 90 days.

Nevertheless, from 2025, these travelers will also be required to have an approved electronic travel authorization, ETIAS, in order to enter the country for short tourist visits.

An ETIAS online application must be registered before planning to travel to Latvia and any of the other Schengen countries for tourism, to receive an approved multiple entry visa waiver digitally linked to the applicant’s passport.

Finally, passport holders from around 150 countries are required to apply for a tourist embassy visa, also known as a Schengen visa for tourism, from the nearest Latvian embassy well in advance of travel.

ETIAS for Latvia

In 2025, all the countries which make up the Schengen Area will implement a new travel authorization system called ETIAS, which will allow travelers from non-Schengen Area countries to visit Latvia for multiple short stays by first pre-registering an online form.

This travel authorization will be available online through a simple application that the traveler will need to fill out with basic personal, passport, and travel information.

During the application process, travelers will also need to answer a few questions related to security and health matters, as well as to pay an ETIAS processing fee. The entire process will only take a few minutes.

All of the data provided on the form will then be checked against European security databases before the ETIAS for Latvia can be approved, in order to pre-screen any potential risks to the Schengen zone.

Once approved, a Latvian ETIAS will be automatically linked to the traveler’s passport, eliminating the necessity to print a paper copy to present at border control.

An approved ETIAS visa waiver allows the holder to enter Latvia and all of the Schengen countries multiple times during its 3-year validity, for a total stay of 90 days per entry. It permits travel to Latvia for tourism, transit, medical treatment, or business purposes.

To visit Latvia for other purposes, it will be necessary to apply for a Latvian embassy visa.

See below for a comprehensive list of all ETIAS-eligible countries.

Embassy or Consular Visa Required

Latvian visa policy dictates that nationals of around 150 countries are required to hold a valid consular visa, also known as a Schengen visa, in order to be able to travel to Latvia no matter the purpose or length of the stay.

To obtain an embassy or consular visa for Latvia, eligible applicants are required to make an appointment at their nearest Latvian government diplomatic office well in advance of the expected date of entry in the country, as it may take several weeks for this travel document to be processed and approved.

After confirming an appointment, the applicant will need to print and fill out an embassy application online with personal information, details about the travel, and passport details to bring along to the consular interview.

On this form, it is necessary to select the correct Latvian embassy visa type according to the purpose of the stay, whether a visa for tourism or business, to work or study, or a resident visa, among other visa options.

According to the visa type selected, the applicant will be required to bring varying supporting documentation along to their appointment.

All applicants will also be required to pay a Latvian Schengen visa fee before the travel document is approved.

Visa Not Required

There are currently around 90 countries whose citizens are exempt from a visa for Latvia for varying periods of stay according to nationality.

All citizens of the countries which make up the Schengen Area are able to travel to Latvia using only a National ID card as they are permitted passport-exempt freedom of movement to Latvia for an unlimited stay.

Travelers from other countries for which a visa is not required for Latvia are required to present a valid passport when passing through Latvian passport control, to be granted a visa-free stay up to 90 days, for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

However, starting in 2025, all visa-exempt citizens from outside of the Schengen zone will need to have an approved ETIAS electronic authorization in order to travel to Latvia for the same period of stay and permitted purposes.

ETIAS for Latvia is a multiple entry online visa waiver which allows holders to visit any of the Schengen countries for multiple short stays during its 3-year validity.

To apply for an ETIAS authorization, eligible travelers will be required to fill out a simple online form, answer a few basic security questions, and pay a processing fee.

If these same passport holders wish to visit Latvia for purposes not permitted with a short stay, such as to study or work, they will need to apply for the relevant Schengen visa type from the nearest Latvian diplomatic mission.
