Visa Policy for Kazakhstan

The visa policy for Kazakhstan states the requirements and regulations that a foreign citizen must meet when wanting to visit the country.

There are around 60 nationalities that do not require a visa to travel to Kazakhstan, for periods of short stay between 14 to 90 days depending on nationality.

However, citizens of more than 180 countries and territories need a Kazakhstan visa to visit the country, either by applying at an embassy or through an online application to obtain a travel visa authorization.

Visa regulations of Kazakhstan currently state that travelers from more than 115 countries are now able to apply for a visa online (eVisa), which removes the need to request an embassy appointment weeks before the trip, or wait in long immigration lines for a visa on arrival at the border.

Those eligible for the Kazakhstan eVisa are able to apply through a simple online form which only takes a few minutes to complete, to receive an approved electronic visa sent by email.

An approved eVisa for Kazakhstan is a single entry electronic visa valid for business or tourism purposes, although it is also available for medical treatment for some nationalities. It permits holders to enter the country once for a short stay of up to 30 days.

Citizens of around 65 countries are required to apply for a visa through a government overseas diplomatic office of Kazakhstan, either an embassy or consulate, no matter the purpose or intended length of the visit.

Online visa-eligible citizens who wish to spend longer periods in the country are also required to apply for a Kazakhstan embassy visa.

Foreign citizens can apply for a wide variety of visas through their nearest embassy of Kazakhstan, whether a work visa, student visa, business visa, religious visa, transit visa, or other visa type.

Tourist Visa Policy for Kazakhstan

The laws set by the immigration department of Kazakhstan permit over 60 nationalities to access the country without the need for a visa for tourism for short stays.

However, travelers from more than 180 countries do need a visa to visit Kazakhstan for tourism, which may either be a consular visa from an embassy, or a tourist eVisa online.

Individuals from over 115 countries are now able to submit a online application to request a Kazakh electronic tourist visa, which permits a single entry stay of 30 days in Kazakhstan. An approved eVisa for tourism is valid to enter the country for 90 days from approval.

To apply for this type of visa, an eligible foriegn citizens must have a passport valid for at least 3 months from the expiry date of the Kazakhstan eVisa, and supply an active email address to which the approved online tourist visa will be sent.

Those not eligible to apply for the Kazakh eVisa are required to obtain a tourist visa an embassy or consulate.

eVisa

The eVisa program for Kazakhstan, introduced in 2019, allows eligible citizens to request an electronic visa through an online application, eliminating the need to apply through a government office in person.,

There are currently more than 115 nationalities that can now submit a simple application online, to receive an approved eVisa sent by email, greatly expediting the process of applying for a visa for tourism or business. Some foreign citizens are also eligible to obtain an eVisa for medical treatment.

A necessary requirement to apply for a Kazakh visa online is that the applicant must first obtain a letter of invitation from the Kazakhstan Migration Service. The invitation letter number must then be provided when completing the eVisa application form.

An approved eVisa permits a single entry to Kazakhstan for a stay of up to 30 days, and may be used to enter the country at one of two designated points of entry, at either Almaty or Nursultan Nazarbayev airports.

In the event that an eVisa-eligible visitor wants to travel to the country for longer stays or another purpose of visit than that permitted with the eVisa, they must apply for a visa from the nearest Kazakh embassy or consulate.

Embassy or Consular Visa Required

Kazakh visa law states that individuals from approximately 65 countries must obtain an embassy visa to travel to the country of Kazakhstan, regardless of the purpose of the visit.

There are around 40 types of embassy visa that can be applied for through a Kazakh government diplomatic office, either through an embassy or consulate.

Among the most prominent of these are the tourist visa, work visa, business visa, transit visa, and student visa. However, there are also visas for humanitarian purposes, investment, adoption, missionary work, and residency, among numerous other activities.

In order to apply for an embassy visa for Kazakhstan, the applicant must make an appointment at the nearest Kazakh embassy or consulate, and complete an application form indicating the type of visa they require.

In accordance with embassy visa requirements, the applicant must also furnish a passport valid for 6 months from the intended date of travel, containing at least one or two blank pages.

Visa Not Required

Although there are more than 180 countries that require a visa to travel to Kazakhstan, the visa policy also states that around 60 nationalities are exempt from visas depending on the period of intended stay.

Travelers from visa-exempt countries may enter Kazakhstan for tourism or business purposes and for a period of stay between 14 and 90 days, depending on nationality.

Additionally, residents of the Balkan Region of Turkmenistan are permitted to enter Kazakhstan’s Atyrau and Mangystau Provinces for up to 5 days without a visa.

Although most Kazakh visa-free citizens are required to present a valid passport to gain entry to the country, citizens of Kyrgyzstan can use a National ID card, while citizens of Russia may use an internal passport.

In order to travel to Kazakhstan for a purpose other than those mentioned above, or for longer stays, visa-exempt citizens must apply for a visa from a Kazakh embassy or consulate.

Visa Not Required for Transit

Since April 2018, passport holders of the People’s Republic of China and India have not been required to obtain a transit visa for Kazakhstan under certain conditions.

A Kazakh transit visa is not required for stays up to 72 hours if they are transiting through the country to a third destination at either Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport or Almaty International Airport.

However, this visa-free exemption only applies if the passenger holds valid air tickets, and is traveling on one of the airlines of Kazakhstan. Otherwise, a transit visa will be required.
