Visa Policy for Indonesia

The visa policy of Indonesia determines who may enter the country without a visitor’s visa and which foreign citizens need a visa for Indonesia.

Regardless of whether they need a visa for Indonesia or not, most international travelers are required to present a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival to gain entry to Indonesia. However, business travelers from select countries are able to gain entry with a passport with a minimum validity of 3 months.

All visitors must also have a valid flight ticket for return or onward travel. Indonesian immigration authorities may also ask arrivals to present supporting documents such as proof of sufficient funds to cover the stay in Indonesia and a confirmed hotel booking.

At present, travelers from roughly 170 countries do not need a visa to visit Indonesia for a stay for up to 30 days. A visa-free stay is permitted for a range of purposes including for tourism and cultural activities, a range of business activities, to visit friends or family, or to transit through the country.

To visit these countries for longer periods of stay or other purposes not permitted with visa exemption, these travelers are required to apply for a visa for Indonesia from the nearest Indonesian diplomatic government office. Additionally, roughly 75 nationalities must have an approved Indonesian embassy visa no matter the travel purpose or intended duration of stay.

It should be noted that business travelers from a select number of countries are now able to apply for an Indonesia e-Visa online. This simplified protocol eliminates the need to visit an embassy in person or endure long immigration queues to complete and submit a visa on arrival application at the border.

The online Indonesia business visa may be issued as either a single entry or multiple entry e-Visa, and for varying periods of permitted stay and validity. This depends on the individual needs of the traveler.

At present, there are no Indonesia visa bans in place for any foreign nationalities.

Tourist Visa Policy for Indonesia

Indonesia’s tourist visa policy states that there are currently around 75 nationalities that require an approved visa to visit the country for tourism, no matter the intended period of the stay. Depending on nationality, this may be either a tourist visa obtained from an embassy or a tourist visa on arrival issued at an immigration checkpoint.

At present, an Indonesian tourist visa on arrival is only available for Libyan passport holders. To obtain this visa type, travelers from Libya are able to wait in a border queue to be given an application by immigration authorities.

After filling out this form, they are required to supply a range of paper supporting documents and pay a processing fee before the visa can be approved. Once issued, an Indonesian visa on arrival for Libyan citizens permits a total tourist stay of 30 days in the country.

All other visa-required nationalities are currently required to obtain a tourist visa from an Indonesian embassy or consulate well in advance of the intended arrival date in Indonesia. This may be issued for a variety of periods of validity and permitted stay depending on the visitor’s nationality and requirements.

E-VISA

Indonesian immigration policy changes in October 2020 introduced an Indonesian e-Visa to facilitate business travel for citizens of select countries during the coronavirus pandemic. The simplified application protocol removes the need to visit an embassy or consulate in person to submit a business visa application or wait in long immigration queues to obtain a visa on arrival.

This electronic visa for Indonesia is available to business visitors, investors, skilled workers, and civil servants from countries who have signed a Travel Corridor agreement with Indonesia. The e-Visa regulations state that applicants are required to have a letter from a guarantor in Indonesia. This may either be from an authorized HRD manager or a member of the Board of Directors of an Indonesian company.

To apply for a business e-Visa for Indonesia, it is necessary to complete a simple online application form which can be filled out in a matter of minutes. Applicants are required to provide basic personal data, passport information, and travel details.

After uploading a few pieces of supporting documents and paying the Indonesia e-Visa fee, applicants are able to submit the application form. The request is then usually processed and approved within a few business days.

After receiving the approved Indonesia online visa sent by email, the traveler can print a copy to present alongside their passport at Indonesian border control.

Indonesian immigration policy states that there is only one nationality who can presently obtain a visa on arrival for Indonesia, citizens of North African country Libya.

A visa on arrival is a type of visa issued to Libyan passport holders at an Indonesian border checkpoint. The application protocol requires the traveler to go directly to immigration control upon arrival and wait in a queue to be handed an application to complete with a range of personal information, travel details, and passport data.

Immigration officers will also ask the applicant to supply a range of supporting documents in paper form. The Indonesian visa on arrival fee must also be paid before the application can be submitted for processing.

A visa on arrival for Indonesia is granted to Libyan citizens for a single entry stay of up to 30 days. It is also possible to extend the visa validity for an additional 30 days once in the country by paying an extra fee.

Embassy or Consular Visa Required

Indonesian laws regarding visa policy identify up to 75 countries whose citizens require an approved visa for Indonesia from an embassy or consulate. This is necessary regardless of the expected duration of stay or the motive for the visit.

An approved Indonesian travel visa from an embassy may be granted for a range of purposes, as either a tourist visa, student visa, business visa, work visa, student visa, transit visa, resident visa, or other visa option. It may permit single or multiple entries and a variety of periods of permitted stay and validity depending on the needs of the individual.

To apply for an Indonesia embassy visa, the traveler is first required to make a consular appointment at the nearest Indonesian diplomatic government office. This should be arranged well in advance of the intended arrival date in the country to allow for sufficient processing time. It may take several weeks for the visa to be processed and approved.

Applicants must then complete an embassy visa form to bring to the confirmed appointment, alongside a range of supporting documents depending on the type of visa they require. It will also be necessary to pay a processing fee before the application can be submitted for approval.
