Visa Policy for Denmark

The Danish visa policy defines the regulations and requirements that foreign citizens from all over the world need to meet in order to travel to Denmark.

As Denmark has signed the Schengen Agreement, it shares the common Schengen visa policy. Therefore, passport-free travel is permitted to citizens of the countries in the Schengen Area, if they simply present a valid National ID Card at a Danish border checkpoint.

A number of other foreign citizens from outside the Schengen zone are also visa-exempt for Denmark and can currently enter the country for a stay up to 90 days for purposes of tourism, business, medical treatment, or transit.

To do so, they are currently only required to present an eligible passport valid for at least 3 months from the intended entry date to Denmark. However, an additional requirement will soon apply for all visa-exempt travelers to Schengen countries.

In 2025, all those who have visa exemption for Denmark and the Schengen Area will be required to obtain an ETIAS authorization online before they can board transportation bound for these European countries for a short stay.

Visa-exempt travelers who need a long-term stay in Denmark must apply for an embassy visa through a government agency, embassy or consulate.

All other foreign citizens need to obtain a Danish embassy visa to visit the country no matter the period of intended stays. While submitting a consular application, it is necessary to indicate the type of visa for Denmark required, whether a tourist, business, work, student or transit visa or other visa option.

Tourist Visa Policy for Denmark

Citizens from all over the world can visit Denmark for tourist reasons, but they may first be required to meet some visa requirements to do so.

Danish visa rules state that citizens of some countries can enter Denmark visa-free for tourism, while citizens of other countries must obtain a Danish embassy tourist visa.

The Danish visa policy currently stipulates that roughly 90 nationalities can travel to the country without a visa for tourism, including all Schengen Area nationals, who are granted tourist freedom of movement if they are holders of a valid ID card.

All visa-free citizens not belonging to the Schengen Area must travel to Denmark with a valid passport to gain a visa-exempt stay of up to 90 days for tourism.

However, in 2025 these same citizens will be required to have an approved ETIAS tourist authorization to travel to Denmark and any other Schengen country for tourism.

A multiple entry online visa waiver, an approved ETIAS allows multiple short stays in Denmark for tourism during its validity.

According to the Danish visa policy, citizens of some 150 countries must obtain a tourist visa from an embassy or consulate of Denmark well in advance of the intended arrival date.

Please see below for more information about visa requirements for your nationality to travel to Denmark.

ETIAS for Denmark

The ETIAS online visa waiver will be a mandatory requirement in 2025 for all nationalities who do not currently need a travel authorization to visit Denmark and the Schengen Area for short stays.

ETIAS means European Travel Information and Authorization System. This electronic authorization program was approved in 2016 by the European Parliament and is being implemented to strengthen external Schengen zone borders by pre-screening visa-free arriving passengers.

Once the system is activated, eligible citizens will be obliged to pre-register for an ETIAS travel authorization for Denmark through a simple online application, by completing the form with basic personal, passport, and travel information.

Before submitting the online form, applicants will also be asked to answer a few questions related to health and safety matters, to indicate the first-entry Schengen member country, and to pay the Danish ETIAS fee using a valid credit or debit card.

Once approved, ETIAS for Denmark will be electronically linked to the applicant’s passport. When registering for ETIAS, applicants should ensure that their passports are valid for at least 3 months from the scheduled arrival date in the Schengen region.

An approved ETIAS Denmark is a multiple entry authorization that grants entry to all of the European countries in the Schengen Area during its 3-year validity, for multiple short stays of 90 days each time, within every 180-day period.

On this form, it will be necessary to indicate the consular visa type for Denmark required, whether a work or business visa, a visa to study, or a resident visa, among other options.

The type of Danish Schengen visa selected will determine which additional supporting documents will also need to be provided when attending the confirmed embassy appointment.

Nevertheless, many applicant will be asked to provide biometric data (ten fingerprints and digital photos) as well as a passport valid for the period of intended stay in Denmark. Proof of valid travel insurance and proof of sufficient means to cover the trip may also be requested.

Visa Not Required

There are currently approximately 90 countries that can enter Denmark without a visa for a period of stay determined by nationality.

Citizens of the Schengen Area, who are granted unlimited visa and passport-free travel to Denmark, can use their national ID cards to gain freedom of movement in the country.

Other countries that have reached an agreement with Denmark for visa-free travel are permitted a total stay of 90 days for tourism, transit, or business reasons, if they present a valid passport at Danish immigration control.

However, the visa policy of Denmark and the Schengen Area will change in 2025, when it will become mandatory for all visa-exempt passport holders to obtain an online travel authorization to gain Danish visa-free entry for the same purposes and period of stay.

This electronic visa waived, named ETIAS, will be available through a digital application that is easy to complete, and once, approved will be linked to the traveler’s passport, which removes the need to apply for a paper document in person.

You can find more information about the upcoming ETIAS system for Demark above.

It should be noted that these same visa-free travelers must apply for a Schengen visa from a Danish overseas consulate if they wish to visit Denmark for longer consecutive stays.
