Visa policy for Chile

Chile’s visa policy indicates which citizens can enter the country without a visa, as well as those who must obtain a Chilean visa in advance of travel.

The visa requirements for foreign citizens to visit Chile depend on nationality, as well as the purpose of the stay and the intended duration.

The visa policy of Chile currently identifies around 90 countries whose citizens can enter the country without the need to obtain a consular or electronic visa, for a visa- free stay of up to 90 days with each entry.

In May 2020, Chile introduced an online visa application, the E-Vistur, which will first be available to citizens of Australia before being rolled out to other eligible nationalities. An approved eVisa for Chile will permit a short stay for either business or tourism purposes.

A visa on arrival for Chile is not available.

Chile currently does not impose any entry bans on any foreign nationality.

Tourist Visa Policy for Chile

The Chilean tourist visa policy determines that roughly 90 nationalities can visit the country visa-free for tourism, while citizens of other countries are required to obtain a tourist visa in advance.

Most nationalities who do not need a visa for Chile for tourism can enter the country for a period of up to three months as a tourist, while a select number may only enter for up to 30 days.

Travelers from all other countries need a tourist visa to travel to Chile for a holiday, whether an embassy visa or an eVisa through an online application.

At the moment, the majority of visa-required nationals need to obtain a tourist visa for Chile in person from the nearest Chilean overseas diplomatic mission well in advance of the intended travel dates.

However, the Chilean government has recently introduced an electronic tourist visa for Chile, named e-Vistur, which greatly simplifies the application process.

Eligible applicants can complete a simple form online with the details of their trip as well as basic personal and passport information, to receive an approved tourist e-Vistur for Chile sent by email.

At the moment, the tourist eVisa for Chile is only available for Australian passport holders but is expected to be rolled out to other nationalities in the near future.

E-Vistur

In May 2020, Chile implemented an electronic visa system, E-Vistur, that will allow foreign citizens of eligible countries to obtain a visa without the need to go through an application process at a Chilean consulate or embassy.

This eVisa for Chile is first being made available to Australian citizens to replace the previous visa on arrival requirement for travelers from Australia and to expedite the application process.

However, it is expected to be expanded to other eligible countries in the near future and eliminate the need to obtain an embassy visa for certain nationalities.

The E-Vistur for Chile will be available through a simple online application that only takes a few minutes to complete with basic personal and passport information, to receive an approved electronic visa for Chile sent by email.

Once approved, applicants are required to print a copy of the Chilean eVisa to present alongside their passport at immigration control in Chile.

Citizens traveling to Chile with an E-Vistur may stay a maximum of 90 days in the country. However, they may also obtain an extension for an additional 90 days once inside Chile.

Embassy or Consular Visa Required

According to Chilean visa policy, travelers who are nationals of around 150 selected countries will need an embassy visa to enter the country regardless of the time they wish to spend in Chile or the travel purpose.

An embassy visa for Chile is a travel document that the traveler must obtain from the nearest Chilean government diplomatic office, well in advance of their intended date of arrival in the country.

The procedure of obtaining an embassy visa for Chile begins by first making a consular appointment. Then, the applicant is usually required to fill out and print a visa application form which must then be brought along to the embassy interview.

It is highly recommended that citizens who need this type of visa request an appointment several weeks in advance of the intended travel to Chile, as processing and approval times can be lengthy.

Chile’s visa policy indicates that nationals of around 90 countries can enter the country without having to obtain a visa.

Most visa-exempt citizens for Chile can stay a maximum of 90 days without a visa in the country, for purposes of either business, tourism, or transit. However, a small number of visa-exempt nationalities are only permitted a stay up to 30 days.

The majority of these travelers are required to present a valid passport at Chilean immigration control to gain entry to the country, although citizens from a number of South American nations are able to enter using a valid ID card.

Chilean visa laws also currently state that Chinese nationals can visit the country for tourism or business reasons visa-free, permitted they are holders of a non-transit visa for Canada or the United States that is valid for at least 6 months when entering Chile.

Additionally, Indian citizens holding a US visa with a validity of at least 6 months can enter Chile visa-exempt for purposes of tourism or business.

Visa not required citizens who wish to spend longer periods of time in Chile are required to apply for the relevant visa type from a Chilean embassy.
