The Azerbaijan visa policy outlines the rules and regulations that determine the entry requirements for foreign nationals coming into the country.

There are several different types of visa for Azerbaijan. The visa options available depend on the nationality of the visitor, the purpose of travel, and the length of stay in the country.

Azerbaijan has an electronic visa (e-Visa) system called the ASAN Visa. Close to 100 different nationalities are able to complete an online application form in order to obtain this e-Visa.

Tourist Visa Policy for Azerbaijan

According to the Azerbaijani visa policy, visitors from the majority of countries require a tourist visa.

Many nationalities can apply online for the ASAN e-Visa for Azerbaijan, which functions as a multi-purpose visa. It grants the holder permission to enter the country for a number of reasons, one of which is for tourism.

The e-Visa for Azerbaijan allows the foreign tourist to stay in the country for a maximum of 30 days. The ASAN system facilitates the application process and smooth entry to the country.

Those not eligible for the eVisa must apply for a tourist visa in person at an overseas diplomatic mission of Azerbaijan, such as at an embassy.

The electronic visa (e-Visa) for Azerbaijan, also known as the ASAN Visa system, is available to travelers from nearly 100 different countries.

The ASAN Visa can be obtained via a quick online application, which can be completed from the comfort of the traveler’s home or office.

Once approved, the Azerbaijan e-Visa is valid for 90 days starting from the date of issue. It grants a single entry to the country and permits the foreign national to stay for up to 30 days.

An approved ASAN Visa for Azerbaijan can be used to enter the country for a number of different purposes, including tourism, business, medical treatment, sporting events, and humanitarian activities.

On the Azerbaijan e-Visa application form, the applicant has to submit their basic personal information, passport details, and certain details about their travel plans, including the address at which they will be staying in Azerbaijan. Embassy or Consular Visa Required for Azerbaijan

Citizens of around 140 different countries are not eligible for the ASAN e-Visa system for Azerbaijan, but can obtain a visa for short visits to the country by applying in person at an embassy.

Visa Not Required for Azerbaijan

Nationals of around 10 countries have the right of visa-free entry to Azerbaijan for short-term visits. These countries are all either geographical neighbors of Azerbaijan or fellow ex-Soviet states.

Belarusian, Georgian, Kazakhstani, Kyrgyzstani, Moldovan, Russian, Tajik, Ukrainian and Uzbekistani citizens have always had visa-free entry to Azerbaijan, while Turkish citizens have been visa exempt since September 2019.

Visa Not Required for Nakhchivan

Iranian citizens may visit one part of Azerbaijan without a visa: the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Visitors from Iran have enjoyed visa exemption for visiting this Azerbaijani exclave since December 2019.

Nationals of Armenia are currently barred from entering Azerbaijan apart from in exceptional cases, such as the participation of Armenian athletes during the 2015 European Games (which were held in Baku, the Azerbaijani capital).

Nagorno-Karabakh and Other Restricted Regions

Azerbaijan has a strict policy of banning foreign nationals from visiting the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh (the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh) and its surrounding territories, which are controlled by Armenia. There are also a number of small exclaves of Azerbaijan currently under Armenian control, which are also restricted.

Any traveler who enters these regions without the prior consent of the Azerbaijani government will be listed as a “persona non grata” and will receive a permanent ban on entering any part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, making them unable to obtain a visa for the country in the future.
