Visa Policy for Armenia

The Armenia visa policy decides which travelers require a visa or travel authorization to enter the country and which type of entry permit is needed.

There are a number of different types of visa for Armenia. The kind required depends on the individual’s nationality, their purpose of traveling to Armenia, and the length of time they intend to spend in the country.

Armenia has an electronic visa (e-Visa) system that allows citizens of a number of countries to obtain their entry authorization online.

This can be used to visit Armenia for short stays for a number of purposes, including tourism, but does not authorize the holder to live or work there.

Nationals of a small number of countries may obtain a visa on arrival for Armenia, which comes with the drawback of having to stand in line to apply at the border. Like the e-Visa, these are only valid for short-term visits and do not permit the individual to work in the country.

Holders of passports issued by various countries must apply for their visa directly at an Armenian embassy or consulategoing to the diplomatic mission in person.

According to the Armenia immigration policy, all foreign nationals who plan to live and/or work in Armenia must also go to an embassy to apply for the relevant visa.

A number of nationalities enjoy visa exemption for Armenia, meaning that they may visit the country using only their passport. However, this is only permitted for a limited time and employed work is prohibited without the relevant embassy visa.

See below a comprehensive guide to Armenia’s rules and regulations regarding visas.

Tourist Visa Policy for Armenia

The tourist visa policy of Armenia dictates that citizens of over 190 different countries and territories require a visa of some description to enter for tourism.

There are several types of Armenia tourist visa.

The first is the Armenia e-Visa — an electronic visa that can be obtained by filling out an online application form. This is the quickest and most convenient way to get a permit to visit Armenia as a tourist, although not all nationalities are eligible.

Those who cannot apply online for the e-Visa for Armenia may instead apply at an embassy or consulate. This is more time-consuming, as it involves going to the nearest diplomatic mission (embassies are usually located in capital cities) and applying in person.

Nationals of a select few countries have another option: to apply for an Armenia visa on arrival. However, this means that in the unlikely event that there is a problem with the application, such as supporting documents left behind, the traveler will be forced to return home.

Consult the map below to find out what types of tourist visas for Armenia are available to holders of passports issued by different countries.

Armenia e-Visa

The electronic visa (eVisa) for Armenia is an online travel permit. It is obtained by completing a quick application form and submitting the necessary supporting documents.

The Armenia e-Visa is considered the simplest way to get permission to travel to the country.

It is available to citizens of around 70 different countries and territories.

According to Armenia’s visa policy, applicants can choose either a single-entry or multiple-entry e-Visa.

There are also 2 options for the maximum length of stay permitted with an e-Visa for Armenia: 21 days or 120 days.

The Armenia e-Visa may be used to visit the country for a number of reasons, including tourism, leisure, and visiting family, as well as business, sporting events, cultural conferences, short educational courses, and medical treatment.

Applicants must fill out the Armenia e-Visa form by entering some basic personal information and their passport details, as well as answering some questions about travel plans, health, and security.

They must then provide a digital copy (scan) of their passport and a recent photograph as supporting documents. An email address must also be provided to receive the approved e-Visa for Armenia.

Visa On Arrival for Armenia

The Armenia visa on arrival is a short-stay visa that can be obtained at border control when entering the country.

In line with the visa policy for Armenia, nationals of a very small number of countries are able to obtain this type of Armenia visa, with the majority of travelers being advised to either apply online for the eVisa or else go to an embassy or consulate.

Visas on arrival for Armenia are only issued at certain entry points.

Visitors flying into Armenia can get a visa on arrival at Zvartnots and Shirak International Airports.

They can also be obtained from Ayrum railway station on the border with Georgia, and a number of land border checkpoints, including the following:

  • Bagratashen, Tavush Province (border with Georgia)
  • Bavra, Shirak Province (border with Georgia)
  • Gogavan, Lori Province (border with Georgia)
  • Meghri, Syunik Province (border with Iran)

Applicants must stand in line at the border and wait to fill out an Armenia visa on arrival application form.

It is important to remember to bring all necessary supporting documents, as individuals who fail to complete the application adequately and meet the requirements will not be granted a visa and will not be allowed to enter Armenia.

For this reason, travelers who have the option to apply for an Armenian e-Visa in advance are strongly advised to, as it avoids waiting around and allows time to resolve an application in the unlikely event of a problem.

Embassy or Consular Visa Required for Armenia

An Armenian embassy visa or consular visa is any type of visa issued by an Armenian diplomatic mission.

Armenian embassies and consulates can issue tourist visas, business visas, work permits, and all other types of entry authorizations, depending on the length and purpose of the trip.

Over 120 different nationalities must apply for an embassy visa for Armenia to visit for any reason or length of time, including short stays for tourism, leisure, or business.

All non-Armenian nationals who plan to travel to the country to live and/or work will need to apply for a residence permit and/or an Armenia work visa at an embassy, as it is not possible to obtain this online or on arrival.

Foreign nationals applying for an embassy visa must go to the diplomatic mission and complete an application form, as well as supplying supporting documents.

Embassies tend to take much longer to process in-person applications than the online platform, so it is advisable to apply for an Armenia visa several weeks prior to traveling, if doing so at a diplomatic mission.
