British citizens who would like to visit New Zealand for tourism or business-related purposes now have a simple and streamlined way to do so.

The NZeTA for UK citizens is an online travel authorization that avoids the need to go all the way to an embassy to apply in person.

Obtaining an eTA for New Zealand from the United Kingdom is a quick, streamlined process which can be completed in minutes through an electronic application form. Simply click the green “apply online” button to begin.

What Is the New Zealand eTA for UK Citizens?

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a type of online visa waiver that allows British travelers to visit the country.

Applying is easy and quick to do. Travelers from the United Kingdom must simply fill in a short online questionnaire. Their approved NZeTA will be sent by email within a few working days at most.

The New Zealand eTA for British citizens was introduced in July 2019 and came into effect in October 2019.

The NZeTA allows UK passport holders to visit New Zealand for tourist, transit, and business travel. It eliminates the need to apply for a visa at an embassy.

Do British Citizens Need a Visa to Go to New Zealand?

No, UK citizens do not need a visa to visit New Zealand for up to 6 months if they have an Electronic Travel Authority.

To enjoy the benefits of this visa exemption, Brits must register online to get an NZeTA.

The NZeTA for citizens of the United Kingdom allows visa-free entry for the following reasons:

  • Tourism
  • Business
  • Transit

Brits will only need a New Zealand visa for UK citizens if they plan to do any of the following in the country:

  • Work
  • Study
  • Live permanently
  • Stay longer than 6 months
  • Engage in any other activities not covered by the terms of the NZeTA

In these circumstances, the British traveler must apply for the relevant type of New Zealand embassy visa.

Do UK Citizens Need a New Zealand eTA to Enter the Country?

Yes. Any British traveler who wishes to enter New Zealand must have a valid travel authorization in order to visit for the purposes of tourism, transit, or business trips.

The approved New Zealand eTA for British citizens is a multiple-entry online visa waiver, which allows any number of visits.

Each stay can last up to 6 months. An eTA is valid for a total of 2 years from the date of issue, or until the traveler’s passport expires (whichever comes first).

What are the New Zealand ETA Requirements for UK Citizens?

New Zealand eTA requirements for British citizens include the following:

  • A UK passport that has validity for a minimum of 3 months beyond the date that the traveler plans to arrive in New Zealand
  • A valid debit or credit card to pay the NZeTA fees
  • A current email address
  • A recent photo of the applicant

Additional British citizens who plan to travel to New Zealand with an eTA should note that they may be required to show proof of sufficient funds to cover the entire visit.

It is also necessary to have proof of onward travel to the traveler’s next destination (which includes a ticket back home or to the next country).

How Will UK Citizens Receive their New Zealand ETA?

An approved eTA for New Zealand  is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport. In the event that the traveler has two passports, they must enter New Zealand with the one that they used to complete the online application form.

Once an eTA is approved, the UK citizen will also be sent a copy of the authorization to the email address provided during the application.

It is advisable to carry a printout of this copy to present alongside the electronically linked passport upon arrival at New Zealand immigration control.

How to Submit a New Zealand ETA Application from the UK

A New Zealand eTA application form can be completed from anywhere using only a smartphone, tablet, computer, or other internet-enabled device. The application takes less than 30 minutes to complete.

When filling out the New Zealand eTA application form, British passport holders will need to provide a few key pieces of information about themselves. Questions on the application will ask travelers for their:

  • Full name (first and last name)
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Contact information (including home address and a working email address)
  • Passport number
  • Passport issue and expiration date
  • Nationality (as noted on passport)

The application will also ask applicants about any criminal history and if they plan to seek medical treatment while in New Zealand.

Finally, travelers will need to pay the eTA fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) for New Zealand, which is included in the total price.

Before submitting the form, applicants are encouraged to go through the form and doublecheck to make sure the information is accurate and spelled correctly. If there are any mistakes, New Zealand Immigration may deny the eTA application or it may take longer to process.

Traveling to New Zealand from the UK with the NZeTA

Once the application is submitted, an eTA is often approved within an hour, although in rare cases it may take up to three business days (72 hours) for the authorization to be processed.

For this reason, British citizens are advised to apply for a New Zealand eTA well ahead of expected travel dates so that there is plenty of time to receive approval.

UK citizens who are traveling with children or other family members should note that each person should apply separately for their New Zealand eTA, even if they are included on the same passport.
