The Canada eTA for Mexican passport holders is an electronic travel authorization that grants entry to the country. It allows citizens of visa waiver countries like Mexico to apply online for permission to visit Canada.

In 2015, the Canadian government introduced the electronic travel authorization (eTA) for travelers from more than 50 countries, including Mexico. Nationals of these countries (with a valid passport issued by one of them) are able to visit Canada without the need to obtain a traditional visa.

Instead, Mexican citizens are able to easily apply for the Canadian eTA from the comfort of their own home. There is no need for applicants to visit their nearest Canadian embassy, send paperwork, or have an in-person interview. Everything is done online and it takes most applicants about 15 minutes to complete the application.

Do I Need an eTA to Travel to Canada as a Mexican Citizen?

Yes, according to Canadian visa policy, Mexican passport holders will need a Canadian eTA if they plan to enter the country via air.

The Canadian eTA for Mexicans is good for stays of up to 6 months in Canada, and can be used for the following reasons:

  • Visiting Canada as a tourist and traveling around the country
  • Doing business in Canada, including meetings, conferences, and signing contracts
  • Visiting family in Canada
  • Transiting onward to a different country via Canada

What Is the Canada eTA for Mexican Citizens?

The Canada eTA is an online visa waiver that provides a convenient way for Mexican travelers to visit Canada. Here are some of the features of the Canadian eTA:

  • Long validity period
  • Multiple entry
  • Stay up to 6 months

The Canada eTA is valid for a period of 5 years from the date of issue, or until the traveler’s Mexican passport expires (whichever comes first). This means that visitors from Mexico do not need to re-apply every year, as is the case with traditional visas.

Mexican citizens are able to enter and exit Canada as many times as they wish, as long as it is done within the validity period of their eTA.

The Canada eTA allows Mexicans to stay in Canada for a maximum of 6 months at a time. This gives travelers plenty of time to do what they want and not feel rushed to return home.

How Can I Apply for the Canada eTA from Mexico?

Travelers can apply for the Canadian eTA for Mexican citizens by filling out the online application form. Applicants must submit basic details about themselves and their passport information. The required data includes the following:

  • Personal information (the traveler’s full name, date of birth, place of birth, etc.)
  • Passport information (passport number, issue date, expiry date, nationality, etc.)
  • Contact information (email address, home address, telephone number, etc.)

There are also a number of questions for security purposes, regarding the following topics:

  • The applicant’s health and medical history
  • Criminal record (if applicable)
  • Previous trips to Canada
  • Plans for traveling to Canada

Once the questions have been filled out and the form is complete, Mexican nationals will need to pay the processing fee and submit their application for consideration.

Before submitting the form, it is highly recommended that all travelers double-check the information that they have entered and correct any typos. Errors and inconsistencies may lead to a prolonged wait or rejection of the Mexican citizen’s Canadian eTA.

Documents required for the Canada eTA Application

There are only a few required documents that Mexican travelers must have in order to apply for the Canadian eTA. They include the following:

  • A valid Mexico-issued passport
  • A current email address to receive notifications and confirmation of the Canadian eTA
  • A valid form of payment (credit card or debit card)
  • A device with internet access, such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop in order to fill out and submit their application

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Canadian eTA for Mexican Citizens?

The processing time for a Canadian eTA is very quick, and travelers from Mexico can usually expect a rapid response. The vast majority of applications are processed and approved within 24 hours — some almost immediately.

However, in rare cases, it may take a little longer to receive confirmation in the event of delays or a high volume of applications during the busy tourist season.

The Canadian eTA will be sent electronically to the email address provided on the application. This is why it is important to enter an email address that you frequently check, so as not to miss the confirmation email.

After the application has been approved, the Canadian eTA will be digitally linked to the applicant’s Mexican passport. Although the Canadian Immigration border officer will be able to view the information on the traveler’s eTA on their computer when they present their passport, it is advisable to also print a copy in the unlikely event of problems with the system.
